"Mountain Sunburst" 22' x 15' 2008
By Virginia A.
Virginia came to Northeast Center following a twenty foot fall that
resulted in cognitive, physical, and communication challenges. As a
child she loved drawing, showing great promise in her teens in painting
and other artforms. She is proud of prizes she won during that youthful
period. Once she discovered the Fine Arts Program at Northeast Center
she was able once again to make art.
Her work in the Art Studio brought her back to childhood
interests and opened a critically important avenue for her renewal. As
if no time had passed she began painting landscape, floral and animal
images with fluidity, sophistication and depth. Though self-taught she
has an innate awareness of color, composition and shading. In 2008 she
won a place in the New York State Healthcare Facilities (NYSHFA)
Calendar, a great honor acknowledging her accomplishments. Her work has
been exhibited in community galleries such as the Albany Institute of
History and Art as well as the Ellenville Hospital and Library
Galleries. Occasionally, in the moment of creativity, Ms. A. can lift
her arms and express the most amazing joy on her face.
