Suzy has had impaired vision since she was a child, yet she enjoyed drawing and painting and was able to see colors and shapes. In high school Suzy invented comic characters and often created small 'murals' on index cards. She especially enjoyed the depiction of landscapes such as sunsets and mountains. A motor vehicle/pedestrian accident caused Suzy to become brain injury and spinal injury survivor in which she lost most of her remaining vision. Suzy was thrown into a world of gray and black, seen from her wheelchair. While she can make out simple forms in high contrast, Suzy continues to make visual art because of her love for the creative process. Her perseverance, combined with assistive technology and one-on-one
staff assistance, makes this possible. Suzy often depicts extremely
specific and detailed images with a story line. She also creates
powerful, energetic images as seen here in this example: “Inner
Force.” Coming from her
intelligent, rich and sensitive inner life, Suzy’s
art always embodies strong conceptual themes.
