As a child Serge enjoyed painting specific images such as roses, trucks and houses. He created a bit of sculpture as well and as a student, he studied science. For many years Serge was one of New York City’s Finest. After retiring as a policeman he became a truck driver. Serge suffered a brain injury resulting from a cardiac arrest and a
subsequent coma. While now using a wheelchair he is learning to walk
again. One day he came into the Art Studio, wanting to see the work
created by our other artists. “Oh
wow”, he said to himself, I can
paint here!” Often he was singing
and creating visual art simultaneously in the Art Studio. He dedicated
this work to Donna, his beloved wife. This meticulously drawn and
painted image densely layered with color, texture and meaning, embeds
Donna in the lyrical foreground. Serge completed his rehabilitation at
Northeast Center and has returned home to live with his family,
including five children.
